“It is not the slumber of reason that engenders monsters, but vigilant and insomniac rationality”
― Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Anti-Oedipus.
I thought of this during a conversation with B re: Dawkins. The convergence of Dawkins’ liberal-empirical absolutism with the Europe’s new-fascism is so obvious it hardly needs saying. But the recent wave of propaganda – the ‘debate’ surrounding the niqab – also underlines the importance of D+G’s concept of faciality for contemporary biopolitics. The libidinal racism of the paternalistic “I just want to see your face” from so many white commentators reveals the extent to which the liberal media fetishes the face as an organisation of forces and affects engaged in the production of subjectivity.
